Each year, Sadler’s Wells hosts its Flamenco Festival here in London. This annual dance fest is now in it’s twelfth year.
Back in 2010, a friend and I went to see Autorretrato (María Pagés Company). The deafening applause that rang out as the curtain fell remains vivid, even now. Along with a packed theatre, I was left in absolute raptures, blown away by the visual and poetic spectacle we’d been treated to. Quite simply, Autorretrato was contemporary flamenco at its pulsating best.
This year, my sister came along for the ride.
Venue: The Peacock Theatre. Show: Tango Fire – Flames Of Desire. And yes, the title alone set my pulse racing!
Tango Fire is a dance company hailing from Argentina, combining live music and traditional Argentine tango to great effect. I wasn’t at all surprised to learn that World Tango champions were amongst the ensemble of dancers, all of whom were sensual, athletic and exceptional in equal measure. Though not on par with Autorretrato in either quality or intensity, Flames of Desire was nonetheless an exhilarating watch and made for an altogether enjoyable night out.
Needless to say, I cannot wait to see which works will be on the bill next year!
Be sure to visit the Sadler’s Wells website for great shows all year round at www.sadlerswells.com. If I’ve whetted your appetite for next year’s Flamenco Festival (and lets be honest, how could I not have?) be sure to pencil it in your calendar for February 2016 – exact dates will be advertised on the site so check regularly for more information.
